The Estevan Bruins have opened an SJHL season at 2-0 for the first time since 2006.
The Bruins scored five times in the first period Saturday night en route to a 7-3 victory over the Melville Millionaires in the Bruins’ home opener.
Kyle Johnson, Ward Szucki, Dylan Smith, Troy Hunter, Mark Cross, Dominic Perrault and Ryan Ostertag scored for the Bruins.
Fourteen of 18 skaters dressed for the Bruins registered at least one point.
“It's pretty balanced,” said head coach/GM Karry Biette. “Are we going to be offensive? Absolutely. I love offence. I love my team scoring goals.”
Ostertag's goal was his first in the SJHL. Perrault's goal came 48 hours after he was acquired from the Battlefords North Stars for a pair of prospects.
Biette said he is pleased that the club is already buying into the systems, but he believes there is still room for improvement.
Estevan opened the season with a 6-4 road win over Melville on Thursday night.
“We've been playing pretty well as a team, getting pucks deep and playing simple hockey, and it's been working for us,” said Hunter, who was named the team's captain last week.
Estevan will visit the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday night in Wilcox. The Hounds will then be in Estevan on Saturday.
