Saskatchewan Roughriders’ all-star visits Estevan

The CFL's league leader in tackles was in Estevan on Sunday evening to help support a cause that is very important to him.

Saskatchewan Roughriders middle linebacker Simpson spoke at a fundraiser for Athletes in Action (AIA) – an international Christian sports ministry. Former Estevan resident Barret Kropf is the Saskatchewan director for AIA, the Riders' chaplain, and a friend of Simpson's.

“My faith in the Lord keeps me grounded, keeps me balanced, because we played this violent, physical game that we loved since we were kids,” said Simpson.

Simpson's visit came two days after the Riders thrilling 43-37 overtime win over the Calgary Stampeders.

“That was a game we wanted to win, we needed to win and it was all-important for the divisional race,” said Simpson. “If we would have lost that game, they would have had the season series on us, and they was no way we could get first place.”

Simpson has 67 tackles through 11 games. He has led the league in that category three times in his career, and he is a six-time CFL all-star.

Defensive lineman Keith Shologan also spoke at the event. He reflected on both his football career and his faith during his speech. Several other Riders attended the event, which attracted about 425 people to the Estevan Curling Club.

A live auction raised nearly $8,000 for AIA.
