Forward depth, goaltending earn rave reviews at Bruins camp

The Estevan Bruins took the first steps towards what they hope will be a banner year during their annual fall camp this past weekend.

Head coach/GM Karry Biette said he was satisfied with the level of intensity shown during scrimmages that took place on September 3 and 4. The competitiveness was better during the Black and Gold intersquad game September 5.

Biette said that this year's camp boasted the strongest collection of forwards since he’s been with the team.

“Right through from the returning guys to the guys we got in futures (players acquired as future considerations in trades) to the guys we recruited, there are some dandy players out there,” said Biette.

Goaltender Joel Danyluk also impressed Biette. One of the Bruins prized off-season acquisitions, the 1990-born goaltender allowed only two goals in three scrimmages, and three goals in the Black-Gold game.

“Danyluk's a big-time goaltender, and I think he's going to be a pretty good goalie for us through the year from what I've seen so far,” said Biette.

Alex Sirard and Shea Cooper are vying for the back-up job, Biette said. Sirard finished last year as the Bruins’ back-up. Cooper has played Junior A hockey in Ontario the last two seasons.

The club will determine their back-up goaltender following the pre-season games.

Estevan lost 4-3 in a shootout to Notre Dame Monday night in an all-rookie exhibition game. Cole Olson scored twice for the Bruins. Ryan Ostertag had the other goal.
