More than 50 objects are currently dangling from the ceiling of the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum’s Gallery II as part of “Drift,” a sculpture and installation project created by Ontario artist Danielle Margaret Davies.
Davies explained the concept behind “Drift” during a reception at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum on Friday night. Hair, marine life and dance – areas of keen interest to Davies – are all combined in the exhibit.
“For about the last five years, I've been working with hair, but in very different ways,” said Davies. “In a lot of ways, I would represent the actual body within the space, and then have the hair as an extended version of the body.”
Synthetic hair is attached to white fabrics that resemble cushions. The combination creates an object that resembles a jellyfish.
The cushions hang from varying heights, and come in an assortment of sizes. The hair is in a variety of colours as well, Davies said.
Davies is also a dancer and a performer, and she said she wanted to examine choreography, as well as people’s movement through space and around objects.
