This week I’m writing about the Qantas Wallabies, which is the Australian National Rugby Team.
The history of rugby in Australia goes back to 1883, when the first rugby union was formed. This first union was called the Southern Rugby Union and it became the first team to tour New Zealand and overseas. In 1892, the name was changed to the New South Wales Rugby Union. It was in 1903 that Australia would face their rivals from New Zealand for the first time. Australia lost this first match 22-3.
Australia’s first international match was a 13-3 win over the British Isles in 1899.
In 1907, the club left Australia to tour the British Isles. This first team was named the Rabbits, but since the players didn’t like that name they changed it to the Wallabies.
The club’s largest win came in October of 2003 when they pounded Namibia 142-0, while the Wallabies’ biggest loss was 53-8, on August 30, 2008, against South Africa.
The Wallabies first appearance in the World Cup of Rugby was in 1987. The Wallabies have won two World Cup titles. Their first title came in 1991, when they went 3-0, won their pool in the round robin and then won the playoffs. Their second title came in 1999 when they again won their pool and then the playoffs. The Wallabies have qualified for the 2011 World Cup, which will be played in New Zealand.
The Wallabies do not have a home stadium, as they play their matches at numerous stadiums around Australia.
Some players who are in the Wallaby Hall of Fame are: Sir Edwards Dunlop, Des Conner, Mark Ella, John Hipwell, Cyril Towers, Colin Windson, David Campese and Nick Farr-Jones.
The Wallabies got their name from the wallaby, which is an animal native to Australia.
The Wallabies team colors are yellow and green. The club’s jersey is yellow highlighted with green stripes down the front and back. The jerseys display the Wallabies logo and name on the right side and the Australian Rugby union logo on the left, as well as the team’s sponsors.
That’s all folks!
