The newest addition to Estevan’s collection of outdoor murals was dedicated on August 19.
“Van Gogh harvesters ‘Siesta’ near Estevan,” created by former Estevan resident Denise Epp, is now on the south wall of Century 21 Border Real Estate Service’s building. Epp returned to the city for the dedication.
The painting depicts a pair of farmers relaxing against a bail of hay. Two horses, an antique tractor, a wheat field and Estevan’s grain elevator are in the background.
In her artist’s statement, Epp said that the mural looks at the past by combining Estevan’s grain elevator and post-impressionistic artist Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Siesta,” which was originally painted in 1890.
Epp said it is one of several pictures she created through digital collage. She takes a master artist’s work that depicts pastoral scenes, and incorporates Saskatchewan’s disappearing elevators.
Van Gogh’s work also demonstrates the energy of daily lives of average people. And the elevators reflect the historical energy of those who built Estevan and other communities.
The mural is one of several that have been erected through the Pure Energy Committee’s Art in Life Committee.
