Southeast Saskatchewan’s history was promoted during the Souris Valley Museum’s inaugural pioneer camp July 19 to 23.
Twelve young people learned more about the heritage of the area and the lifestyles of the pioneers who settled the region. Each day had a different theme: pioneer life on July 19, working life on July 20, school life on July 21, Estevan area history on July 22 and wrap-up activities on July 23.
Tours, scavenger hunts, butter making, rope making, water hauling, traditional farming techniques, a spelling bee, printmaking activities, dip pen lessons, stories, crafts and games were included in the camp.
Participants also enjoyed a pair of field trips. The first was of Sherritt Coal, the SaskPower Shand Power Station and the Shand Greenhouse on July 20. The other on July 22 was a guided tour of geological points of interest in the Roche Percee area with Southeast Tours and Trails.
Another pioneer camp will be held from August 2 to 6.
