As I write this I am wedged between two car seats on the way home from our holidays in Alberta. Upon boarding our WestJet flight we were greeted by an enthusiastic flight crew who were cracking jokes left, right and center. During the preliminary safety demonstrations they took a moment to recognize a couple on the plane that had brought them a box of timbits to enjoy. It was obvious to everyone onboard that this couple’s simple gesture completely made this crew’s day and in turn they were jovial, enthusiastic and extremely helpful to the rest of the passengers – it was a win win for everyone! So this week I suggest that you and your family set out to brighten people’s days with some “random acts of kindness.”
Half the fun of random acts of kindness are coming up with creative ideas to implement. During your R.A.O.K. operation any and everyone can be a target. You could start by “going after” someone that you already know. Perhaps you could bring your teacher an apple, cut an elderly neighbour’s lawn or bake cookies for a family with young kids. It doesn’t have to be a major gesture; any act of kindness will go a long way in putting a smile on someone’s face.
Doing nice things for people you know is great but I really recommend you try to do at least one R.A.O.K for a complete stranger. It is usually completely unexpected and will have great results. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
• Tape the correct change to a drink machine and attach a note that says “This one’s on me!”
• Choose a local business and go in at coffee time to bring them donuts or homemade cookies.
• Stand outside the grocery store on a rainy day with an umbrella and offer to escort people to their vehicles.
• Go to a movie and pay for the people next in line.
• Tell the next person you are served by what a great job they are doing.
There really are a million ways you could be kind this week even it’s just a smile and a thank you. Go to the ifamily Facebook page and tell us your ideas!
