Estevan Strippers Spring Bust tournament attracts 28 teams

The Estevan Vikings and the Alameda Red Army met in the Estevan Strippers Spring Bust tournament.

Twenty-eight teams were in Estevan for the Estevan Strippers Spring Bust hockey tournament that was held from April 7 to 11 at the Civic Auditorium and the Lignite Miners Centre.

The Brandon North 40 won the Ray Frehlick over-45 Division. Brandon finished in a tie with the Regina Slow Shots and the Estevan Ikon Capitals with 2-1 records. The North 40 won the tie-breaker because they surrendered the fewest goals.

The Estevan Viking 45s won the Preston Meyer Memorial Division. The 45s were tied with the Indian Head Chiefs at 2-0-1, but the Viking 45s surrendered fewer goals.

The Weyburn Ambassadors won the Bill Dutton Division. Weyburn and the Regina Loafers had 2-0-1 records, but Weyburn won the tie-breaker.

Other results were:

*The Estevan Flyers beat the Estevan Red Eyes 9-2 to win the Einar Fagerheim Memorial Division.

*The Avonlea Antiques beat the Estevan Tower Wolves in the Sherritt Coal Division final.

*The Alameda Red Army defeated the Estevan Baxter Cougars 7-3 to win the Days Inn Division.

*The Estevan Oilers beat the Estevan CEDA Sharks 5-3 in the Tap House Division final.

Several awards were also handed out. Al Hamilton, a 66-year-old player from the Yorkton Old Relics, won the oldest player award. A player can win the award just once.

The Carson Wings won the Tap House Sportsmanship Award for the over-40 and over-45 divisions. They had zero penalties in the tournament.

And the Red Army and the Oilers shared the James Schroeder Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the over-30 divisions. Each team had eight penalty minutes.

Barry McKinnon, a long-time member of the Strippers club, passed away suddenly due to a heart attack on April 7. McKinnon’s No. 57 home and away Strippers jerseys, as well as his No. 7 jersey for the Viking 45s, were hanging at the social area in the Estevan Curling Club.

The Viking 45s also had his jersey hanging from the bench during his games.

A moment of silence was observed for McKinnon prior to the Viking 45s’ games.
