The Estevan Apex Midget AA Bruins saw their season come to an end in controversial fashion.
Estevan was swept by the Weyburn Wings in a best-of-three, first round South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League (SSMHL) series. Weyburn won Game 1 6-5 in double overtime on March 3. And Weyburn won Game 2 8-3.
But it was the result of Game 2 that left many fans angry.
Estevan initially won Game 2 with a 6-5, come-from-behind double overtime victory on March 5 in Estevan. Mark Moriarty scored the winning goal.
It appeared that Game 3 would be played on March 7 in Weyburn.
But Weyburn appealed the result based on a referee error. Estevan was assessed a five-minute major during the third period that was not served. SSMHL president Larry Kienas sided with Weyburn, and order that the game be replayed from the point in which the referee’s mistake occurred: with 7:56 to play in the third period, and with Weyburn ahead 5-3 and on a two-man advantage.
Weyburn scored three power play goals late in the third period to emerge with an 8-3 win.
Kienas declined to comment on his decision to repeal the result of Game 2.
