Estevan’s recycling services have been extended to include tin cans and some plastic jugs. Estevan City Council approved the change during Monday night’s meeting.
Plastic laundry containers, and some milk and juice jugs, will now be accepted at cardboard and paper recycling depot, located near the intersection of Sixth Street and Souris Avenue.
Council initially considered a one-year trial run for plastic jug and tin can recycling, but decided instead to make a final decision at the end of August, when the paper and cardboard recycling contract ends.
Council will then approve all of the recycling contracts.
Mayor Gary St. Onge said Council remains optimistic that the provincial government will come forward with funding for multi-material recycling for curbside pick-up.
“Eventually it is going to be multi-materials, there's no doubt in my mind, for the province,” said St. Onge. “Of course, the big cost right now is the cost of paper recycling.”
The expanded recycling services will cost an additional $965 per month, city manager Jim Puffalt said during in a report. Funding will come from Saskatchewan Environment.
