The Estevan Apex Midget AA Bruins saw their season come to an end Sunday at the Civic Auditorium.
Estevan lost 8-3 to the Weyburn Wings in Game 2 of their best-of-three first round series. Weyburn won Game 1 6-5 in overtime last week.
But Estevan’s defeat was mired in plenty of controversy.
Estevan initially won Game 2 6-5 Friday night. The Bruins trailed 5-3 late in the game, but rallied to tie the game at 5-5, and scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime.
Weyburn appealed the result on the grounds of a referee error. The South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League sided with Weyburn, and ordered that the game be restarted with 7:55 remaining in the third period – the point in the game where the referee's error occurred – and Weyburn on a two-man advantage with a 5-3 lead.
The Red Wings capitalized on some Estevan penalties to win 8-3.
